You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. Psalm 65:2

Dear partners in international student ministry,

On Tuesday, July 17, 2012 a 5-alarm fire at "The 3949" apartment complex on Lindell Blvd. in the Central West End destroyed 130 apartments. Saint Louis University employee Bobby Wassel estimates that 120 students lost apartments and possessions in the blaze. Many of these students were international students. SLU opened residence hall rooms for the students to live in immediately following the crisis.

How can we help:Please pray for the people who lost their apartments and belongings in the fire. May the Lord provide peace, comfort and physical necessities as they begin the work of putting their lives back together after the fire.

Can we donate toward their physical needs? Yes. If you would like to give a donation to help the students during this crisis, International Student Ministry-St. Louis is working with Saint Louis University to collect and distribute needed items.

Suggestions for Helpful Donations:

  • Basic Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.)
  • Gift cards to local stores (Target, Walmart, etc)
  • New (socks, underwear, etc.) or gently used clothing
  • Food -- Non-perishable, easily consumed (trail mixes, snack crackers, etc.)

Invitation to Volunteer with International Student Ministry-St. Louis:

Join ISM-St. Louis as we welcome new international students with our Welcome & Furniture Give-Away. Most students arrive in St. Louis with just a few suitcases. Upon arrival, one of their first tasks is to furnish their apartments with basic items. ISM-St. Louis helps by collecting used furniture and household items in "ready to use" condition. If you have articles to donate, please email your name, address, phone number and list of household items to Chris Culley at wufurnituregiveaway@gmail.com or call him at 314-452-6406.

All items will be picked up by volunteers on Friday, August 17. (It is helpful for church families to collect small items together so we can make one stop to pick them up. We are happy to pick up furniture from the ground floor of donors' homes.) On Saturday, August 18, volunteers set up everything in a covered parking garage at Wash. U. Then, we distribute everything to the students and help deliver the items to their apartments. If you would like to help, please contact Chris Culley (see above). If you have a van or pick-up truck, please bring it on Saturday the 18th.

Suggestions for Furniture/Household Item Donations:  dressers, desks, beds/futons, mattresses, small tables, chairs, small sofas, book cases, pots & pans, rice cookers and other small kitchen appliances, dishes, cups, glasses, silverware, bowls, lamps, bed linens, towels, kitchen gadgets, rugs and bicycles.
